Hello, my name is Yuna. This is my fourth article about Korean museums. I’d like to get you to know Buyeo National Museum. Buyeo was the capital of Baekje during the Sabi Period (538~660). Baekje culture was strongly influenced by China, as the artifacts found in the Tomb of King Muryeong before the Sabi Period gives the evidence. However, when the Sabi Period started, Baekje culture became successful by taking on its own unique artistic identity.

Buyeo National Museum has about 15,000 artifacts from the Chungnam Province region in its collection specializing in Baekje culture. There are about 1,000 which are on permanent display including 3 national treasures and 5 treasures.

Exhibition 1 (Prehistory and Ancient History) shows the history and culture of the Chungnam Province region before the emergence of Baekje, including prehistoric artifacts from the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. You can see Bamboo-shaped Bronze Implement. This is named for its resemblance to a split of bamboo or a sword hilt, and it has a human hand carved on its surface.

Exhibition 2 (Baekje Domestic Culture) focuses on the domestic culture of the Baekje Dynasty, especially the Sabi Period, by exploring how people of the era handled the necessities of life. You can see National Treasure No. 2871, Baekje Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner. This features a dragon-shaped pedestal, lotus-shaped bowl for burning and a lid covered by mountain forms. There is a Bongwhang, a legendary auspicious bird perched atop the lid.

During the Baekje Dynasty, particularly lotus-flower patterns were popular for many types of artistic works. Lotus flower patterns, characterized by sooth curves and large size, were often carved on tiles or bricks. You can see Hoja in Exhibition 2. Hoja means a “tiger-shaped vessel”. This particular object seems to have been used as a male chamber pot.

Exhibition 3 (Baekje Arts) includes Buddhist sculptures, artifacts of foreign cultural exchange, personal ornaments, architecture, and tiles. Gilt-Bronze Standing Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Statue is a prime example of mature Baekje Buddhist sculpture. This statue is actually National Treasure 293.

Buyeo National Museum gives a number of cultural and educational programs. I visited here on Chosuk (Korean Thanks giving) holidays, so I could experience Korean traditional games like the game Sangmo in this picture. You can get more information at the website (www.buyeo.museum.go.kr). It serves language options in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese.

It was fun to write the information of this museum as this article, and I had some fun seeing all these artifacts. The Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner was my favorite because of the delicate carvings as a blooming flower. I’m pretty sure you will like the others, too. For the Sangmo game as this funny picture, it was hard to spin it even 1 turn! I hope you are more interested in Korean artifacts now.
