SAFE BURIALS ARE NEEDED TO CURB EBOLA
We are all sure that the breakout of the terrible virus, Ebola would probably be the most shocking event in 2014 all over the world. About 8,844 people died from this fatal disease; the deaths caused mainly in countries with widespread transmissions, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. As a solution to this epidemic spreading through dead bodies, people came with an idea: safe burials of bodies, which means no more rituals by the local people.
As Ebola became worse and took more and more lives, West Africa needed a solution to this problem, and as a procedure of handling this issue, they needed to bury Ebola victims safely to stop it from spreading through dead bodies. Since the probability of infection gets higher with time, and the concentration of virus peaks during the last phase (death), one droplet of sweat, blood, or saliva from bodies could sufficiently kill other people. With many of its people at stake, the government in Sierra Leone implemented safe burials in local regions with burial teams from the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health. It said all bodies from highly widespread regions should be treated as Ebola Victims.
However, there had been many hardships of pushing these procedures; traditional rituals needed to be done before the burial. Spirituality runs deep in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea, and people with their believes didn’t want the government’s intervention. There were resistance and quarrels, and the local people even pelted the burial teams with stones. According to a local anthropologist, Julienne Anoko, the government should change the way they treat infected bodies. He said, “People handling the intervention only looked at health issues. They didn’t understand the cultural aspects of the epidemic. Anoko and other people familiar with local traditions helped the government realize that Ebola couldn’t be curbed until they found a way to have safe burials with respects of the local traditions.
