i) Belgian English Education System
Environmental factors contribute a lot to English learning but formal education system established by the government is also a crucial factor in students learning English. Belgium’s schools are divided into mainly 3 stages: Primary School(6-12), Secondary Education(12-18), and Higher Education. Primary School is equivalent of an elementary school in Korea, and Secondary Education is Korea’ middle school and high school put together. English education in Belgium starts when the Belgian students are Derde Middelbar, which is equivalent of a 3rd grader in middle school.

English textbook in Korean elementary school
This is relatively late considering that Korea starts its English education in elementary school. However, we must not overlook the fact that as explained before that a Belgian child grows up with English in their environment. To learn and understand the Belgian English curriculum and education system at depth, I interviewed Inge Shepers, a high school teacher at Humaniora Kindsheid Jesu. She was able to provide a look into the Belgian English education system and what it focuses on teaching students.
