[조이누리 기자단] 하소이 - The Call of Death: AIDS

 AIDS, the abbreviation of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, has always been one of the most dangerous diseases in the world throughout the decades. This disease can be deathly because once the AIDS virus is activated, it constantly weakens one's immune system until he's completely defenseless. Today, I’d like to talk about the three aspects of AIDS; its deadliness, its treatment, and the way it affects its victim’s life.

 

ASPECT 1

 First, AIDS is one of the most lethal diseases in the world. According to United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, about 1600000 to 2300000 people die of AIDS in each year. As you can see from the definition of AIDS, it destroys one's immune system and makes him very vulnerable to outside bacteria or virus. In our normal immune systems, bacteria and virus can't affect our bodies. Even when our immune system is weak, our body can handle in a few days (this is when we catch a cold.). However, the infected person of AIDS can die with a simple cold because the body lets virus breed in it, destroy cells, and finally dominate it. Therefore, without a great amount of medication, the infected person's body is completely defenseless to outside world which is full of viruses.

ASPECT 2

 Second, the treatment for AIDS is very expensive. This treatment requires a great amount of medication of different kinds, and as AIDS can't be fully cured, it continues until the end of the patient's life. Although there are many ways to live with AIDS, and there are assistances of governments in some countries, these treatments are usually expensive for the Third World countries, and about 80% of the infected people are actually unable to afford these treatments. According to the medical research of UN, without any treatment, a person with AIDS can only live 2 to 3 years. Therefore, in countries like Africa, hundreds of people die of AIDS even there are many ways to treat it.
