Hello, JOKOers! 👋
What if your Korean night out started not inside a restaurant, but right on the street? 🌙🍻
The sun is going down.
You’re walking through Jongno 3-ga, and suddenly, the streets start to look a little different.
Somewhere nearby, you hear:
“짠!” 🥂
Welcome to a Korean 야장 (yajang)!
🌙 So, what exactly is a 야장?
야장 is a casual outdoor dining and drinking experience, where people enjoy food and drinks at tables set up outdoors — often along the streets.
It’s not quite a restaurant.
It’s not quite a bar.
It’s something in between — and it’s one of the most fun ways to experience Seoul after dark.
🍢 First, pick your food.
At a 야장, the table quickly fills up with Korean favorites.
🍢 파전 (pajeon) — Korean savory pancake
🌶️ 닭발 (dakbal) — spicy chicken feet
🥚 계란말이 (gyeran-mari) — rolled omelet
🍜 해장라면 (haejang ramyeon) — ramen often enjoyed after drinking
And there’s one important word you’ll want to know:
안주 (anju) = food eaten with drinks
So instead of asking:
“What are we having for dinner?”
You might hear:
“안주 뭐 먹을래?”
What should we get for our drinks?
🍶 Then, choose your drink.
Soju?
Beer?
Maybe makgeolli?
Whatever you choose, there’s one Korean expression you’ll probably hear sooner or later:
“짠!” 🥂
It means “Cheers!”
And at a Korean 야장, you might hear it quite a few times.
🇰🇷 JOINUS TIP
Here are a few Korean expressions you might actually hear at a 야장:
“한잔할래?”
→ Want to grab a drink?
“안주 뭐 먹을래?”
→ What should we order?
“짠!”
→ Cheers!
Try using one the next time you find yourself at a Korean 야장. 😉
So, if you found yourself sitting at a 야장 in Jongno tonight…
What would you order first? 👀🍻
