[이 한국어 통역 되나요?] EP.03: Why Do Koreans Ask Your Age First? 🤔
조인어스코리아2026. 9. 3. 17:00
Hello JK Korean learners! 👋
Have you ever met a Korean person who asked, “몇 살이에요?” (How old are you?) right after meeting you? 👀
In Korea, asking someone’s age can be a relatively natural part of getting to know them. That’s because age can influence how we speak, what we call each other, and how we build relationships. 🗣️🤝
So sometimes, “몇 살이에요?” is not just:
👉 “How old are you?”
It can also be a way of asking:
👉 “How should we speak to each other?” 👉 “What should I call you?”
But does being the same age automatically mean you can start speaking casually? Not always!
Age is only one part of the picture. Familiarity, situation, and relationship can all matter when Koreans decide how to communicate with each other.
In the third episode of 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」, we're taking a closer look at “몇 살이에요?” and the cultural meaning behind this seemingly simple question.
🌎 Is asking someone's age common in your country? 🤔 Would you feel comfortable answering someone you just met? 💬 What would you think if someone suddenly asked, “How old are you?”
