[JOINTERVIEW] - 한국 생활 13년 차 영국 출신, 태권도 매니저 출신 Darren의 이야기

조인어스코리아 한국어 교실 인터뷰는 언어/문화 교류 NGO 단체인 조인어스코리아의 한국어 교실 수업을 수강하는 외국인 학생들을 대상으로 한국어 교실 수업에서 배운 내용과 소감에 대한 인터뷰와 실제 한국에 거주하며 경험했던 한국의 문화, 언어 등 일상생활에 대한 이야기를 공유하며 추후 한국에 거주하는 외국인들에게 한국 생활에 적응에 도움이 될 수 있도록 기획된 인터뷰입니다.
JOINUS KOREA Korean language class interview is for informing our Korean class and sharing the interviewee's experience while he has experienced Korean culture, language, difficulties to encourage other international students to adjust in South Korea.

1. Hello, Darren, Could you introduce about yourself ? Darren, 간단히 본인 소개 부탁드립니다.
Hello, Sion, I am Darren Rushbrook from London of England, living in South Korea for about 13 year. First I came to South Korea in 2010, lived in Korea for 5 years, briefly returned to England and came back to Korea in 2017. After I came back to Korea, I have been living in Korea since now. I am living with my family, my wife (she is Korean) and my lovely daughter in Uijeongbu.
안녕하세요, 저는 한국 생활 13년 차 영국 런던에서 온 Darren Rushbrook입니다. 저는 2010년에 처음 한국에 와서 2015년까지 5년 동안 한국에서 살다가 잠시 영국으로 돌아갔었습니다. 2017년도에 다시 한국에 와서 지금까지 살고 있습니다. 현재는 한국인 와이프와 18개월의 귀여운 딸과 함께 의정부에 거주하고 있습니다.
2. Could you tell me about what you did for work before you came to Korea, and now? 한국에 오기 전에는 어떤 일을 했고, 현재 한국에서는 어떤 일을 하고 있나요?
In England, I worked as a government prosecuting officer for 4 ~ 5 years. While I had worked the officer, I received a job offer for managing Taekwondo school in England from my master instructor. As I worked the manager of the Taekwondo school, I was impressed with the students who are passionate for learning. Through this experience, I wanted to transfer my job to teach motivated people. When I first came to Korea, I had taught elementary students. For now, I have been teaching English for college students, which is located in gyeong-gi do.
영국에서는 약 4~5년 정도 Government prosecuting officer로 일을 했었습니다. 그러다가 우연한 계기로 저의 master instructor로부터 새로 열게 된 태권도장에 매니저 역할을 제안받게 되었습니다. 아무래도 범죄와 관련된 일을 하다 보니, 심적으로 안 좋은 영향을 받았었는데, 태권도 장에서 매니저 역할과 열심히 태권도 수업을 듣는 수강생들을 보며 많은 동기부여를 받았고, 이 경험으로 인해, 사람들을 가르치는 일을 하고 싶다고 마음먹게 되었습니다.🙂 처음 한국에 왔을 때는 초등학생을 대상으로 영어를 가르쳤습니다. 현재는 약 3년 전부터 경기도 소재의 한 대학교에서 대학생들을 대상으로 영어 교사로 일하고 있습니다.
3. What made you come to Korea? 한국에 오게 된 계기는 무엇인가요? The reason how I decided to come to Korea is that my friend recommended living in Korea. But I had considered living in another country which has different culture for a long time. When I considered the country where I would like to live among South Korea, China, Taiwan, the friend recommended Korea even he had not visited South Korea before 😅. Not only for his recommendation, there were some people who recommended living in South Korea. That's how I decided to come to South Korea.
한국에 오기로 결심했던 결정적인 계기는 친구의 추천입니다. 하지만 원래부터 오랫동안 영국과 다른 문화를 가진 나라에서 살고 싶다고 생각해왔었습니다. 처음에는 한국, 중국, 대만 중에서 고민하고 있던 중 그 친구가 한국을 추천했습니다. 물론 그 친구는 당시 한국을 방문해 본 적은 없지만, 다른 아시아 나라를 방문해 보면서 더욱 한국에서 사는 걸 추천했었고, 그 친구뿐만 아니라 한국을 추천하는 친구들이 있어서 한국으로 결정하게 되었습니다.
4. What your family said when you decided to come to Korea? 한국으로 오는 걸 결정했을 때, 가족들은 어떤 반응이었나요?
When I first talked about my plan for living in South Korea, my parents didn't believe me. They were surprised of me when I showed my flight ticket to South Korea. But they were not aware of South Korea very well, there was nothing special what they said to me.
처음 한국에 간다고 말했을 때, 부모님께서는 제 말을 안 믿었었다. 아마 농담이라고 생각했었던 것 같은데, 실제로 한국행 비행기 표를 보여드리고 나서야 제가 한국에 가는 게 진짜라는 걸 믿으신 것 같아요.😄 당시 부모님께서는 한국에 대해서 거의 모르고 계셔서 특별하게 말씀해 주신 것은 없었습니다.
5. Is there any inconvenience while you have been living in Korea? 한국에 살면서 불편한 점은 없었나요?
When I first came to Korea in 2010, I was a vegetarian and I couldn't eat egg and kimchi (there is salted fish seasoning in kimchi) At the time, the concept of vegetarian was not famous in South Korea. In addition, it was hard to find vegetarianrestaurants. Not only for this reason, there are many delicious food in Korea, so I just gave up on vegan life after almost one month, and now I am enjoying Korean foods. My favorite foods are '곱창' and '순대국'.
2010년에 처음 한국에 왔을 때 저는 계란이나 김치도 못 먹는 채식주의자였습니다. 당시 한국에 채식주의자라는 개념 자체가 한국에서 잘 알려지지 않았고, 주변에 비건 음식을 파는 식당을 찾기 어려웠습니다. 그리고 특히 한국에는 맛있는 음식이 정말 많습니다. 결국에는 한국에 온 지 한 달 만에 비건을 포기하고 지금은 맛있는 한국 음식을 즐기고 있습니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 한국 음식은 '곱창'과 '순댓국'입니다.
6. What made you learn Korean? And how did you know JOINUS KOREA Korean class?
한국어를 배우게 된 계기는 무엇인가요? 그리고 어떻게 조인어스코리아 한국어 교실을 알게 되었나요?
The reason why I started learning Korean is thatI have been lived in Korea. In particular, since my wife is Korean, my daughter mainly communicates in Korean when she is with mother's family, friends and others. That's why I need to learn Korean as well. While I was looking for Korean class inSeoul, I found JOINUS KOREA Korean class by googling.
한국어를 배우게 된 계기는 제가 한국에 살고 있기 때문입니다. 특히, 우리 가족 중 와이프가 한국인이고 제 딸이 와이프와 와이프의 가족들, 그리고 친구들을 만날 때, 주로 한국어로 소통하고 있어서, 저희 가족을 위해서 한국어를 배우고 있기도 합니다. 조인어스코리아 한국어 교실을 알게 된 계기는 서울에서 진행되는 한국어 교실을 찾던 도중 구글 검색을 통해서 알게 되었습니다.
7. Which type of JOINUS KOREA Korean class you participated in? Have you ever participated in any other Korean class from other institutions? 조인어스코리아 한국어 교실에서 어떤 수업을 들었나요? 혹시 조인어스코리아 한국어 교실 외에 다른 곳에서 한국어 수업을 들은 적이 있나요?
Yes, I took a Korean language class from a university for one semester (3 months). The class was helpful for learning Korean, especially grammar. But it was the burden of taking the classes again due to the tuition fee. But the Korean language class of JOINUS KOREA has reasonabletuition fee and there are two types of class (1:1 class, open group class). I took the 1:1 class with 12 times of lessons for 3 months from August. During the term, my Korean teacher couldn't keep teaching me with his personal reason. So I took 6 times of lessons with my first teacher and took other lessons with another teacher. With the first teacher, I could learn a lot of knowledge including grammar. With the second teacher, we focused on practical speaking with Korean. Next time, I would like to take the open group Korean class. 😄
조인어스코리아 이전에 한 대학교에서 외국인들을 대상으로 한국어를 가르치는 수업을 1학기(3개월) 동안 들었던 적이 있어요. 물론 당시의 한국어 수업을 통해 많은 것을 배웠지만, 수강료에 대한 부담이 컸습니다. 그래서 더 길게는 못 들었어요. 조인어스코리아의 한국어 교실은 수업료에 대한 부담이 적고 1:1 수업이 있어서 신청하게 되었어요. 8월부터 3개월 동안 총 12회로 진행되는 1:1 수업으로 들었습니다. 수업 중에 강사분의 개인 사정으로 중간에 선생님이 바뀐 적이 있습니다. 첫 번째 강사님의 경우는 문법이나 문장에 대해서 많이 배울 수 있었습니다. 그다음 선생님은 스피킹 위주의 수업을 했습니다. 첫 번째 강사님을 통해 문법, 단어 등의 한국어 지식을 배우고 두 번째 강사님을 통해 실제로 한국어 스피킹 연습을 많이 해서 두 수업의 밸런스가 좋았던 것 같아요. 그리고 1:1 수업이어서, 학생의 한국어 실력과 강사님의 수업 스타일에 따라 서로 논의하면서 결정할 수 있었어요. 다음번에는 1:1 수업은 이미 들어봤으니 Open Korean 클래스(그룹 수업)을 들을 예정입니다.
9. What do you think the Korean language class needs to improve? 조인어스코리아 한국어 교실에서 아쉬웠거나, 개선되었으면 하는 점은 무엇이 있을까요? First of all, I am generally satisfied with the Korean class because the tuition fee is reasonable. As if I need to talk about any improvements about the class, I think the Korean lesson, especially 1:1 class, will be different with a Korean teacher's teaching type. In my case, my first lessons were focused on grammar and other lessons proceed practical speaking. But I only took 1:1 class, I would like to take the open Korean class in next time.
무엇보다도 조인어스코리아의 한국어 교실의 수업료가 저렴하는 것에서 만족하고 있습니다. 다른 기관이나 학원 수업의 경우, 수업료가 많이 부담되는데 조인어스코리아의 수업료는 부담이 적어서 좋습니다. 아쉬운 부분을 말하자면, 아무래도 1:1 수업이다 보니, 강사님의 스타일에 따라 수업 진행 방향이 많이 달라질 수 있다는 것입니다. 저의 경우, 첫 번째 강사님과는 문법, 단어를 위주로 수업이 진행되었고, 두 번째 강사님과는 스피킹 위주의 수업으로 진행되었습니다. 물론 저는 1:1 수업만 들어서 다음번에는 그룹 수업이 어떻게 진행되는지 수업을 들어봐야 자세히 알 수 있을 것 같습니다.
