Understanding How Belgium Learns English
i) TV and Entertainment
The environment for learning language consists of numerous factors working at various different levels. However, in a way, the very essence of an environment that is ideal for learning language is one that exposes an individual to a lot of input. Moreover, it would be even better if the individual exposed to a language is interested and focused. While this is easily put into words, it is very difficult to create an environment where the students of a language voluntarily is focused and interested in something that is delivered in foreign language to start off with. However, Belgium accidentally might have the perfect factors create such an environment.
Because Belgium is a small country with population of approximately 10 million people. Thus, Belgium does not have a centralized broadcasting system that is going to produce and create shows that require high capital. This would be inefficient for a country like Belgium with limited viewers and capital. While programs like the news or some regional interview shows might be in Dutch, most of the entertainment shows are imported from other countries. The most popular imported programs are from the U.S. and in English.

Picture 3 is a TV schedule from just a month ago, and as it can be seen, the TV schedule of major channels (1~8) on prime time (usually the evening time) is filled with popular U.S. soap operas. These major Belgian broadcasting stations air American television on TV every day at times when families gather to watch hours of TV. To clarify, American shows are imported and broadcasted in other countries as well, but they are not broadcasted by major stations like KBS or MBC but rather channels dedicated to broadcasting foreign programs.
