Learning English Easily, Early and Eagerly

• Insight into English Education in Belgium

I.                 Introduction – My Visit to Belgium

For my aunt and uncle living in Belgium and my family living in Korea, English was always the language we would use to talk to each other. In a way, one could say that our family’s official language is English. This is mainly because my uncle is Belgian. In Belgium, Dutch or French is the common language, but they speak perfect fluent English. Along with Belgium, Dutch and Luxemburg, countries that do have their own language also speak fluent English. Belgians we met during our time in Europe visiting my uncle completely transformed what learning English as a second language meant.

I had always assumed that the reason why we spoke English with my family in Belgium was because we couldn’t speak Dutch or French. So, when I visited Belgium for the first time last year, every second was a surprise. Maybe I was expecting grammatically flawed, severely accented English that would be impossible for us to even grasp at or maybe I assumed that all countries that take on English as a second language could not possibly feel comfortable using it. However, this was not the case in Belgium.
