 Born as the only son of Robert Wilberforce, a wealthy merchant, William Wilberforce was just a small, sickly delicate child with poor eyesight. On the series of deaths of his father and uncle, he came into a great inheritance, and when he was in Cambridge, he spent most of his early days in university to his hedonistic lifestyle, seeking pleasures in playing cards, gambling, and late-night drinking sessions. While still in university, he was also interested in a political career, and encouraged by his Cambridge friend, William Pitt, who had already set on a political career, in September 1780, at his age of 21, he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston upon Hull, spending over 8000 euro to ensure he received the necessary votes. He attended Parliament regularly as an independent, and he also managed a lively social life.

 Around this time, in 1780s, in England, the triangular route that took British-made goods to Africa to buy slaves, transported the enslaved to the West Indies, and then brought slave-grown products such as sugar, tobacco, and cotton to Britain, represented 80 percent of Great Britain's foreign income. British ships dominated the trade, supplying French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese and British colonies, and in peek years they carried forty thousand enslaved men, women, and children across the Atlantic in the horrific conditions of the middle passage.
