To respect ancestors in Chuseok

  Hello, my name is Suyoung-Kim.

  Now, the summer season has gone and autumn season is coming. And the Chuseok, Korea's one of the traditional holidays is coming, too. When, Chuseok comes, many Koreans take care of their ancestors' tomb. Today I'd like to introduce about Korea's traditional culture how to memorize ancestors when Chuseok comes.

 이제 여름이 가고 가을이 오고 있습니다. 그리고 가을과 함께 한국의 대명절인 추석이 오고 있습니다. 추석이 되면 많은 한국인들은 조상님들의 묘를 찾는데, 저는 오늘 그런 한국의 문화에 대해서 소개하겠습니다.

  For a long time, it has been a filial duty for Koreans to respect and memorize their ancestors in Korea. Korean people think that they owed much to their ancestors, so they memorize their ancestors with various kinds of way in Chuseok.

 예로부터, 한국은 조상님들을 섬기는 ‘효’문화가 발달되어 있습니다. 그래서 추석에도 우리의 풍요로움을 조상님들의 덕으로 생각하여 예를 올립니다.

 First, they go to their ancestors' tombs and clean the graveyard and they call this event as "Beol-cho". Normally they finish this event before Chuseok comes or sometimes during the Chuseok holidays. 

우리는 추석을 위해 가장 먼저 ‘벌초’를 합니다. 벌초는 조상님들의 묘를 찾아가서 무성해진 풀도 깎고 조상님의 묘를 정성껏 손질하는 것입니다. 벌초는 추석 전에 끝냅니다. 

  And then, they hold memorial service for their ancestors on the morning of Chuseok holiday, called as "Cha-rye". They prepare various kinds of seasonal foods and bow to their ancestors with sincerity.

 대명절인 추석 당일에는 이른 아침부터 조상님들께 ‘차례’를 올립니다. 조상님들께 감사하는 마음을 담아서 정성껏 준비한 음식을 대접하며 절을 올립니다.

 

After holding memorial service for their ancestors at home, they visit to their ancestors' graves normally located in their hometown or cemetery. They bow to their ancestors' grave that their ancestors are burying and they called it as "Seong-myo".

 차례를 마치고 나서는 ‘성묘’를 갑니다.

성묘는 조상님들의 묘를 찾아뵙는 것을 말합니다. 

 

 In old times, most Koreans were farmer so their home town was near from ancestor's grave. They could take care of their ancestors' grave before Chuseok, and also could visit to ancestor's grave on Chuseok holiday. But nowadays, many people live in urban area so it is not easy to visit the ancestors' grave. Therefore, they usually do both of them at once. 

  But I think the Korean people's mind to memorize and respect their ancestors is same has not changed.

옛날에는 대부분의 한국인들이 농경문화였기 때문에 조상님의 묘와 거주지가 가까워서 추석전에 벌초를, 추석 당일날 성묘를 갈 수 있었습니다. 하지만 요즘 사람들은 대부분이 도시에 살기 때문에 자주 찾아뵙기가 힘듭니다. 그래서 벌초만 가거나, 성묘와 벌초를 합쳐서 같이 하는 경우가 일반적입니다. 하지만 옛날이나 지금이나 조상님을 섬기는 마음은 모두 같다고 생각합니다.

 이번 추석에는 여러분의 조상님들을 생각하며 그들에게 감사합시다.
