CANADIAN SCHOOL LIFE

여러분들 한번쯤은 외국에서의 학교 생활이 어떤가에 대해서 궁금해 보셨을 수도 있습니다. 저는 몇 개월 전에 캐나다에서 귀국하고 왔고, 다시 돌아가 탐방한 캐나다의 학교 생활에 대해서 설명해 드려보려고 합니다.

You might have once wondered about the school life of foreign countries. Well, I have experience of a Canadian school, and have returned back a few months ago. Today, I want to talk to you about the school life in Canada.

        

   일단은 수학 시간은 이렇습니다.

먼저 첫 번째로, 캐나다의 중학교에서는 학생들이 자율적으로 노트를 쓸 수 있도록 권합니다. 캐나다의 대부분 중학교들은 중간고사, 기말고사를 보지 않고 학년이 끝날 때쯤에 큰 시험을 치른다고 합니다. 한국에서는 중간고사, 기말고사가 있기 때문에 학생들이 시험기간에만 공부를 하게 만들지만, 캐나다처럼 학년 말 시험을 치르면 평상시에도 공부를 하게 만들고, 선생님의 말씀을 더욱 집중해서 듣게 합니다.

First of all, highschoolers take notes of their own. Most of the highschools don’t have mid-term exams or term-end exams, but they take a big exam at the end of the year. In Korea, mid-term and term-end exams encourage the students to study only when the exams are coming up. But if Korea holds an end-of-the-school-year exam like Canada, it will gradually make the students study through the whole year, and listen to the teacher better.

 

 그리고 또한 수학시간에 중요한 것들은 벽에 붙일 수 있도록 만들어 놓았습니다.

Also, they made the walls as notice boards so they can remember stuff they learned during class.

 

두 번째는 미술시간입니다.

Secondly, it’s about Art class.

 

한국에서는 미술에 필기시험을 성적에 반영하지만, 캐나다는 그렇지 않습니다. 오직 수행평가만으로 미술 성적을 처리합니다. 평가기준은 학생들이 얼마나 그림을 진짜처럼 잘 그리냐가 아닌, 얼마나 열정이 담겨 있는지, 창의적인지를 평가합니다. 그리고 한국이랑 분위기가 다릅니다. 한국은 미술에서 몇 점을 받느냐가 더욱 중요시 되고 있지만, 캐나다에서는 정말로 경쟁의식을 지니지 않는 듯, 여유롭게 미술시간을 즐깁니다. 모둠으로 앉아서 대화도 나누며 자신의 작품을 완성합니다.

In Korea, a written test is taken and analyzed in the students’ report. But in Canada, it’s not. It is only what they do and make in art class that go in to their art scores. It’s not about ‘who’s better at drawing’, but about how creative, and how much effort the student put into their artwork. The mood of the classroom is really different from Korea. It is important to get a good score on your artwork in Korea, but in Canada, they do not have much rivalry. They draw and paint, relaxed and freely. They sit as a group, talk a little with their classmates while painting, and then finish their artworks.
